What to Bring to Your First Concealed Carry Class This Summer
Joe Bitz Jul 09, 2026
Signing up for your first concealed carry class is a big step, especially during the summer months when people tend to have more availability and free time. With warmer days and more flexible schedules, it’s a great season to focus on personal safety and new skills. But before you walk into one of these concealed carry classes, it helps to know what to bring and how to prepare. Showing up ready, both mentally and physically, can make the learning experience smoother and less stressful.
We’ve talked to plenty of first-timers over the years, and most worry about one thing, what to expect. That’s normal, and getting your gear in order ahead of time gives you one less thing to think about. Knowing what to wear, what to pack, and what mindset to bring can give you more confidence walking in and more focus once you're there.
What to Wear: Comfort and Safety Come First
What you wear really matters during firearms training, especially in the heat of summer. Classrooms may be air-conditioned, but you could still be moving around a bit or heading somewhere warmer than expected. The key is to find a balance between comfort and safety without making it complicated.
- Pick lightweight, breathable fabrics that still provide coverage to protect skin
- Short sleeves are fine, but avoid tank tops or anything too loose or flimsy
- Closed-toe shoes are mandatory, and they should have good grip and support
- A sturdy belt can help hold your holster steady during movement or demonstration
- Leave the big jewelry, scarves, or anything that might snag or get in the way at home
You don’t need special clothing to attend class, but dressing with purpose can help prevent distractions and keep the focus where it belongs, on learning.
Gear to Bring (Even If You’re Using a Rental)
Whether you're bringing your own firearm or planning to use a rental, there are some basics you shouldn't overlook. It’s always smart to check the class description or call ahead to see exactly what's required, but some items tend to show up on nearly every packing list.
- Your own handgun (if allowed) that you’re ready to train with
- A reliable holster made for that firearm, one that covers the trigger and fits properly
- At least one or two extra magazines for reload practice
- Ear and eye protection, some classes provide them, but it's good to have your own
- A hard case or range bag for transporting your firearm safely
At All American Gunslingers in New Port Richey, Florida, our concealed carry classes include hands-on instruction from certified trainers in our climate-controlled indoor range, and we offer rental firearms and safety equipment for those without their own gear. Our facility ensures all students can train in comfort regardless of Florida’s summer weather, and instruction covers practical skills tailored to new and returning shooters alike.
If you're unsure about some of the gear, don’t overthink it. What matters most is that everything fits you well and can be used safely. That includes practicing how to draw from a holster if the class requires it. Feeling familiar with your equipment helps you focus on the lesson instead of fumbling with your setup.
Paperwork, ID, and Class-Specific Items
It’s easy to forget the paperwork when you’re focused on things like your firearm and gear, but these small details are just as important. Your class may start with a sign-in, and missing documents can slow things down.
- Bring a valid photo ID (driver’s license is usually fine)
- Pack any forms or waivers the class asked you to complete in advance
- A notebook and pen can be useful, especially in classes that include a written portion or group discussion
- If this isn’t your very first firearms course, bring copies of past training certificates if the instructor asks for them
Don’t stress if you’re not sure what to bring, most concealed carry classes will let you know ahead of time. But double-checking that you have everything in your bag the night before helps you arrive calm and prepared.
Mindset and Etiquette for First-Time Students
What you bring mentally to your first class is just as important as the gear in your bag. Being new to something, especially something as serious as carrying a firearm, can feel overwhelming. But the truth is, most instructors understand that and expect people to have questions.
- Arrive on time and ready to listen, try not to bring distractions like phone calls or texting
- Approach the day with a learning mindset, not like a test you need to pass on the first try
- Be respectful of others in the class, and give your full attention during group or individual instruction
- If something doesn’t make sense, ask, there’s no judgment in getting something clarified
- Follow all safety rules without debate, this isn’t the time for shortcuts
People sometimes forget that etiquette matters just as much in firearms training as it does anywhere else. A patient, polite approach goes a long way toward creating a better experience for everyone.
Ready to Learn and Train with Confidence
The class you take may be just a few hours long, but what you learn can shape your habits for years to come. That’s why it pays to be ready from the start. Showing up with the right mindset and packed bag doesn’t just help you feel more confident, it sets the tone for how seriously you’re going to take this training.
Learning how to carry responsibly takes focus, attention, and practice. When you take care of the basic prep work ahead of time, you create space to engage with what matters most. And when you walk away from the class, you’re more likely to leave with new skills, stronger habits, and a clear sense of what safe, responsible carry looks like going forward.
At All American Gunslingers, we believe preparation is just as important as participation, especially when it comes to firearm training. Whether you’re new to carrying or brushing up on the basics, showing up ready for class makes the experience smoother and more useful. Planning to attend one of our concealed carry classes?
